Off-road trailers conjure up images of overlanding to far off destinations. But would you be better served by a vehicle that fits your family and gear without a trailer? In many cases, the answer is yes. Trailers severely limit where you can go on the trail. You are essentially turning your 4x4 into a front wheel drive car, with two more tires behind you that aren’t doing anything to help with forward progress. Need to turn around on a tight trail with a trailer? Good luck. Oh, you can just back down the trail instead? That is no easy feat either.

Do you think owning an off-road trailer is right for you? Keep watching and leave a comment below on what you think are the most important items for a successful off-road camping adventure.

If you aren’t going on rugged trails that require low range, a trailer is perfectly acceptable. The three most common off-road trailer styles are pop-up, teardrop, and basic utility trailers derived from old M416 military trailers. As the name implies a utility trailer is just a blank canvas to haul gear, tents, water, propane… basically whatever you want to bring with you. A teardrop trailer typically has a small door on the side to enter a sleeping area, and a rear hatch that opens to access a camp kitchen. Pop-up trailers have an integrated tent to provide head room but lower when not in use for a smaller volume and lower height.

Note that none of these trailers are particularly light, and they only get heavier as you fill them with gear. Make certain that your vehicle is up to the task of towing a trailer, in particular the brakes and the cooling system. Trailers can also be expensive. You can spend up to $230,000 on a fully outfitted Living Vehicle trailer. Granted, that is the extreme end of the spectrum, but $25,000 trailers are not out of the ordinary. Ask yourself if that money would be better spent on a combination of quality camping gear and AirBNB rentals.
