Sweep (transition) FX scare a lot of young producers. I'm here to show you that they are not as complex as you may think.

In this tutorial we will use more of a subtractive approach. Meaning we will take a block of sound (noise, pitched, natural, etc) and then use filters and other FXs in order to sculpt away at our dense block and emphasize a sweeping motion.

There's nothing wrong with using ready made transition FX from a sample pack but it's always good to know that you can make them yourself. The benefit is that you can really get these transition FX to blend seamlessly with the sounds from the production you're working on.

Transition effects come in all shapes and sizes. In the next two weeks we will look at two approaches to crafting such effects. This week we tackle the sweep via subtractive means. Just like subtractive synthesis we will start by creating a large block of sound (typically some sort of noise) and then subtract elements away to end up with a “sweeping” motion at the end.

It’s important to stress that there are a lot of different methods to achieving this type of effect. We are simply showing one approach that anyone can follow regardless of software or samples. You can create just as effective a sweep in Soundation as you can in Ableton Live or Logic.
