This Laysan honeycreeper became Extinct in 1923 due to the near destruction of vegetation cover on the island right after the introduction of bunnies as a food supply for guano miners in the 1890s. The final event that led to the Laysan Honeycreepers extinction was a deadly storm. The species has not been seen again. Although the species is extinct it was a beautiful looking bird while it lasted, While An adult male Laysan honeycreeper had a vermilion upperbody structure, an ashy-brown lower stomach and underwing covert feathers, and a dark white undertail. Adult females were very similar to the male Laysan Honeycreeper, except instead had paler red feathers. After molting, the feathers became brighter but proceeded to fade with prolonged sunlight exposure. Another species that went extinct by human intervention mixed with mother nature’s wrath. So sad to see dees cute wittle birdies go. This is a cruel cruel world.
