Work will begin soon to beautify the Vaigai banks in the city under the riverfront development project as part of the smart city mission.


The project has been conceived to convert the river into a tourist attraction with all basic amenities, at an outlay of Rs 81.41 crore. The 3.1-km stretch of the river between Raja Mill Road and Kuruvikkaran Salai will see remarkable transformation in a few months as many interesting attractions and features have been planned.


One such attraction is the two heritage parks coming up on the northern side of the river. One is planned at Obula Padithurai while the other will be built a couple of hundred metres away from Kuruvikkaran Salai. The parks will have seating facility, walking tracks, playing equipment for children, fountains and sanitation facilities. Officials said the development work will start with making the river bed uniform. Currently, the river bed is bumpy and uneven resulting in water flowing only in a part of it. Retaining wall will be constructed on both banks of the river without changing the river alignment.


As part of the project, the roads on both sides of the banks will be widened with a provision for pedestrian walkway and green space throughout the 3-km stretch. Street lighting will be the ultimate attraction as various types of lighting has been planned. There will be tree dome lighting, shrub uplighter and brightly-lit street lights. A permanent ramp will be constructed at Alwarpuram for the entry of lord Kallalagar into the river, which is a component of the riverfront development project. The city corporation spends about Rs 15lakh every year to construct a temporary ramp. There will be toilet facilities at six places alongside the stretch, officials said.


Aneesh Sekhar said that they had also planned to revamp the centuries-old Maiya Mandapam, which is in a dilapidated state, near Albert Victor bridge under the project. However, it was ruled out as the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department officials decided to take it up themselves. Also called as Theerthavari Mandapam, it was constructed in 1293 by Kalingarayan.
