What do you think of GE vs Frigidaire freezers?

For a company literally named cold air, you'd expect higher quality.

I thought Frigidaire was one of the quality brands.

Frigidaire has a 12K BTU window AC. That's around five hundred dollars, though you'd think it would be five stars for that price.

But it isn't.

For 500 dollars, you get four stars. A lot of Frigidaire freezers are the same way, charging five star prices for three to four star appliances.

I care about quality as well as price.

GE ranks worse than Frigidaire when it comes to reliability. However, it is not much worse.

That's not much better than any other advice I've heard. Which freezer do you think is better?

Frigidaire is more energy efficient.

That's certainly important given how much power the freezer uses.

GE has had a history of electrical shorts and control board failures that causes the whole freezer to fail. In a few cases, the freezer actually caught fire.

Fire and Ice is a George Martin book, and it certainly isn't something that should occur in real life.

GE offers freezer alarms on a lot of their freezers. Or you could buy one separately.

A freezer alarm just gives me warning to try to shove it all in my fridge or run to the store to get a lot of ice. I don't want to need a freezer alarm.

I know. And the savings for a less reliable GE freezer is lost the moment all the food in the freezer goes bad.

I have a large family. The loss of all that food may be more than the cost of the freezer itself.

Then you ought to get a Frigidaire freezer.

Any advice on which one?

A flat chest freezer is more efficient, while an upright freezer is easy to get to everything, kind of like a fridge. But no matter the design, you need locks on it.

So the kids don't get into the ice cream?

So they don't accidentally turn themselves into popsicles trying to play or hide in it.
