(24 Apr 2019) Iran's foreign minister has warned the United States that there will be consequences if the United States tries to stop Iran from exporting oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
Mohammad Javad Zarif said that if the U.S. or any other country uses the Strait of Hormuz, they must communicate with the Iranian National Revolutionary Guard.
President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on countries that import Iranian oil in November but some countries got temporary waivers that allowed them to import Iranian oil. The U.S. now says those waivers, which primarily impact China, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, will expire May 2.
President Trump made the decision as part of the administration's "maximum pressure" campaign on Iran that aims to eliminate all of its revenue from oil exports that the U.S. says funds destabilizing activity throughout the Middle East and beyond.
Zarif made the comments Wednesday in New York at the Asia Society, a nonprofit with a mission to build ties between Asia and the west.
Zarif also offered to do a prisoner exchange with the United States.
