Yes you can, and you can use a huge variety of potting mixes, but like I've been saying for a long time, you need a deep understanding of how to water the various mediums. You can use bark. You can use moss. You can use a combo. And there are many more...Or, my favorite, is the Treehouse mix from Oh Happy Plants.

Let me tell you more. Most bark mixes are SUPER dry and I usually recommend soaking them overnight in order to condition the mix to start to accept water. And even then, you still have to water more frequently in the first couple months after repotting. Most people fail to do this, and then when they repot their orchid and it suffers, they blame the repotting, but it's ALL in the watering. Being flexible with watering is KEY.

In terms of moisture retention, the Treehouse mix falls somewhere in between the "usual" bark mixes on the market, and sphagnum moss. It's really a happy medium! (pun intended). So it becomes very beginner friendly.

It is not absolutely necessary to soak Treehouse overnight. Just a couple minutes is sufficient before using it. And to water this project that I made for this video, I'm simply going to top water with a watering can. If you use this mix for a single potted orchid, you can top water too, or just soak it for 5 minutes. It will accept water much more easily than other bark mixes for orchids.
