Optic Nerve Hypoplasia (ONH) can be a complex visual impairment as it can affect many facets of an individual’s daily life and growth. Students with ONH may face challenges in the sensory, language, social skills, motor, and vision domains. There are a variety of strategies however that may be implemented to help them be active learners and participants throughout their day in the home and/or classroom. In this webinar, providers of various disciplines will share strategies they use when working with a child who has been diagnosed with ONH. They will also discuss how collaboration with a teacher for students with visual impairments is key for promoting skill development in all environments. The goal of incorporating ONH strategies shared in this workshop is to empower students with ONH of all ages and abilities to be as independent and an active learner as much as possible. Collaboration is the conclusion of the ONH 101 series – What is ONH (Part 1) and Strategies (Part 2).

The webinar will focus on a variety of strategies that can be used with children with ONH of all ages and abilities in the home and classroom.

Learning Objectives:  

The participant will identify three areas of development of which strategies were shared.

The participant will identify three specific strategies identified that may be implemented with a child with ONH in the home or in the classroom.

The participant will identify two visual strategies that should be implemented to help a child with ONH in the home and in the classroom.

The participant will review the importance of incorporating strategies for behavior, sensory, language, social skills, and vision while teaching students with ONH in the home and in the classroom.
