After 20+ years, Sabaton have finally released a song about ancient Egypt. And it's not the pharaoh you'd expect...

Sabaton, the Swedish power metal band, has finally done a song about ancient Egypt, and if you look at the lyrics for Cycle of Songs, you might not think it's anything too specific, but there's actually a lot more going on behind the scenes. The song is about Senusret III. He was a ruler from the Middle Kingdom, specifically during the 12th dynasty. He reigned during the mid-1800s BCE, give or take, and he was quite an accomplished builder and warrior, and a well-respected monarch in the Nile Valley. Senusret III enjoyed a strong posthumous reputation, but today he's one of the lesser-known rulers. Ask your average person on the street. They probably know Ramesses II, Tutankhamun, and maybe Hatshepsut. Senusret would be far down the list. At a glance, the lyrics for the song don't sound particularly specific to Senusret III, but they actually are based on an ancient text. In the late 1800s. Archeologists working at Lahun, which is near the Fayoum, uncovered a papyrus that included a cluster of songs written in honor of Senusret III. The songs seem to be Middle Kingdom and were probably composed during the King's reign, to be recited in public in his honor. This cycle of songs has been translated repeatedly over the last 100 years or so, and it's been published in German and English. And the band's songwriters have actually used this text as the basis for their lyrics. So this isn't actually just a generic song about ancient Egypt. It is based on an ancient Egyptian text about this particular king.
