It was supposed to be a celebration of light.

Hundreds gathered at Australia's iconic Bondi Beach Sunday evening for "Chanukah by the Sea" — families, children, Holocaust survivors — all there to mark the first night of Hanukkah with free donuts, a petting zoo, and the lighting of a giant menorah.

Instead, two gunmen opened fire.

At least 15 people are dead, including a 12-year-old child and Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who helped organize the event. More than 40 others were injured in what Australian authorities have declared a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.

On Monday night in Mayfield Heights, a small-but-determined group braved the cold Monday night to light the menorah outside Temple Israel Ner Tamid, lifting their voices in song despite the darkness cast by the deadly terrorist attack. As Rabbi Matthew Eisenberg led the congregation on the second night of Hanukkah, he remarked "We are conscious of our precious gift of family."

"When people get together to celebrate something — rededicate themselves to living a life that's Godly and taking care of others — and then terrorists come just to try to kill and murder children, moms, dads, Holocaust survivors, old people — it's disgusting," he told 3News prior to the ceremony.
