A fresh batch of natural tallow and beeswax candles was made. Soon after, heavy snow arrived, settling thickly across the glen. We checked on the mother cows and their calves alongside the goats, breaking ice where needed to make sure the water troughs had not frozen. The Jacob sheep were given a small grain treat, and snow was brushed from the solar panels to keep them working. The young cows were fed a measured amount of grain, while, in the background, the little ones made the most of the snowfall with their sledges.

We then set up to make soap, demonstrating a simple, traditional bar made from wood-ash lye rich in potassium hydroxide, combined with tallow, a small amount of beeswax, and essential oils. The process was carried out with care, using protective eyewear and gloves, with plenty of ventilation, and the mixture kept under constant heat while being stirred. After around an hour and a half of steady mixing as saponification took place, the soap was spooned into a mould, left to harden, then removed and shaped before being set aside to cure.
