Madakaripura Waterfall is a lesser known, but spectacular place in the Tengger mountain range of East Java, Indonesia. It's often included on tours to Mount Ijen and Mount Bromo and is a welcome break on the 4-5 hour drive between the two.

The tallest of 5 falls stands 200m and is the second highest in Indonesia. Supposedly a place of meditation for Gajah Mada, the military commander of the Majapahit Kingdom, you can see a stern statue at the entrance of the path to the falls.

Situated about an hour's drive away from Mount Bromo, there's a small car park from which you can take a short motorbike ride and buy your entry (with a guide costs 50,000 IDR). You then walk for a couple of kilometres through the jungle till you reach the ravine into which the waterfalls tumble.

It's incredibly green and (at least when I went) was not crowded at all. Madakaripura offers a welcome, refreshing break from the drive and considering the low entry cost is well worth seeing if you're in the area.
