Excessive rain unleashed widespread devastation in the surrounding area in and around Pune. This led to the submerging of numerous houses in low-lying areas. Resulting in damage to properties both internal and external, household items, electrical appliances such as TVs, Refrigerator, washing machines, AC, mixers, and other items like furniture, clothes, etc
It was also reported that individuals operating stalls on the pavement electrocuted as they were closing their stalls due to electric current entering stagnant floodwater.
Near Lavasa City, three people from a nearby village became trapped after a mudslide buried two villas.
The release of water from the Khadakwasla dam, prompted by heavy rainfall, has resulted in flooding along the Mutha River and surrounding low-lying areas.
Excessive rain and floods bring physical and financial burdens to individuals. They do not distinguish between poor and risk and impact all.
However, rich people have the capacity to rebuild the lost ground. However, the poor may not have enough resources to return to their original state. What mitigation actions can be taken within the individual’s reach. Every such incident reminds us to take some mitigation action; COVID, CrowdStrike, Dubai Flood. Human memories are short; once such an incident passes away, we forget to take mitigation actions.
Rain and Floods are not in our control within us. However, we can take HOME INSURANCE to protect our Home & belongings. Home insurance is a good option for individuals to mitigate the risk of losing their property and belongings due to flood or natural calamities such as earthquakes, storms, theft, or fire. Home insurance helps customers rebuild their homes and purchase household content by paying annual premiums to the insurance company. The insurance premium is way smaller than the money they receive to rebuild their lives.
Pictures of cars submerged in water are a common sight during excessive rain or flood. Similar pictures were also common during the recent Dubai Flood. Third-party motor insurance is mandatory in India. It does not cover the repair cost of our own damage. Comprehensive insurance is required for coverage of our own damage due to any reason. Such coverage will help the owner in repairing their car if a flood has damaged the car. The insurance premium for comprehensive insurance is higher than third-party coverage but it is worth taking.
Amid frequent flooding in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), with financial assistance from the Centre, has studied the challenges caused by flooding. The PMC will then prepare a strategy for flood mitigation and ensure overall safety of the citizens
The non-structural measures include a flood management cell, a flood response cell, and teams at the ward level, which would be equipped with early warning and flood monitoring systems.
The structural measures include priority works at 52 flooding hotspots. There will be a study of the flood challenges in the entire city at all watersheds and basins, and a strategy will be prepared for flood mitigation
The PMC had submitted a proposal of Rs 478.22 crore for the project to the National Disaster Management Authority. Rs 250 crore has been sanctioned by the Centre and soon the fund will be available to the civic body
The frequent flooding in certain areas, particularly during the monsoons, has resulted in heavy socioeconomic losses in the last five years. In 2019, when the Ambilodha river overflowed, it caused losses of Rs 200 crore and claimed 26 human lives.
