Welcome to the video! My name is Keith, a dad who pays child maintenance through the Child Maintenance Service (CMS). When I started this journey, there wasn't much clear information available—the CMS website was confusing, and the staff weren’t very helpful. That’s why I began making these videos, to help parents like you navigate the system with ease.

In today’s video, I’ll break down the three figures that commonly appear on your CMS calculation letter or website. People often get confused, but I’m here to clear things up. The first figure is the arrears amount—never pay the arrears figure directly. It simply reflects when the case started and is already included in your payment plan.

Next, I’ll show you which figure you should be paying: the one listed under your payment plan. This is the most important number, as it updates regularly based on your payment schedule (whether you pay weekly or monthly). I’ll also explain why this figure might be slightly less than the CMS-calculated amount in cases where you are in credit or when adjustments are made, like for pension contributions.

I'll walk you through how CMS smooths out payments over time to ensure consistency for both paying and receiving parents. Additionally, I’ll touch on how pension contributions can affect your child maintenance, and why it’s essential to submit your pension details promptly to avoid overpaying.
