The world’s largest tropical wetland is on fire and around 600 jaguars could be in trouble.

Since late 2019, Brazil’s Pantanal region has faced unprecedented fires. This year alone, an estimated 22% of the entire region has burned. In the past, rivers, lagoons and swamps acted as barriers to stop fires from uncontrolled spreading.

But conditions in the last year have been dry. The fires have devastating consequences for animals especially for already-declining populations of jaguars.
