Back in October of 1997, something very strange happened at Cornell University: somehow a pumpkin ended up perfectly impaled on the lightning rod of McGraw Tower. This event was known as the "Great Pumpkin Mystery," and still puzzles everyone to this day because no one knows exactly who placed it there—or how. The tower is 173 feet (53 meters) tall, making it highly improbable that someone could’ve simply thrown it up there. The bottom of this 50lb pumpkin was carved out to fit the light rod ever so precisely, so it’s suspected that someone managed to sneak up the tower, squeeze through the small service hatch at the bottom of the roof, and then scale an extremely steep, 20-foot tall pitched steel roof to position the pumpkin. The feat was so difficult that the pumpkin remained there for 157 days before they eventually had to bring in a crane to take it down.
