Cox's Bazar is the most popular tourist region of Bangladesh. It is a city, fishing port and tourist center located in the southeastern part of Bangladesh. Famous for its scenic beauty, this district is 152 km from Chittagong and 414 km from Dhaka. It has Bangladesh's largest marine fishing port and submarine cable landing station.
Apart from the longest beach in the world, there are many other places to visit and places to visit. Among the popular places of this diverse district inhabited by different tribes or ethnic groups are Labani Beach, Sugandha Beach, Kalatali Beach, Himachari, Inani Beach, Marine Road, St. Martin, Ramu Buddha Vihar, Maheshkhali, Sonadia Island, Kutubdia Island etc.
The name Cox's Bazar is derived from the name of an officer of the British East India Company named Captain Hiram Cox. The earlier name of Cox's Bazar was Palangki. After the promulgation of the British East India Company Ordinance, 1773, Warrant Hosting was appointed as the Governor of Bengal. Hiram Cox was then appointed General Manager of Palangki. Captain Cox tried to resolve the thousand-year-old conflict between the Arakan refugees and the local Rakhines and made important progress in the resettlement of the refugees but died (1799) before the work was fully completed. A market was established to commemorate his rehabilitation contribution and was named Mr. Cox's Market. Cox's Bazar Thana was first established in 1854 and the municipality was formed in 1869.
