PART 6 – Dialing in the Cam - How to Build a CB Performance 2017cc Builder’s Choice VW Engine

Here I’m looking at the cam timing, also known as ‘dialling in the cam’. To do this I have already set the crank thrust, cam thrust, backlash and attached #1 rod. I look to find TRUE Top Dead Centre TDC, find the maximum lift of the intake and exhaust cam lobes, the point at which the intake and exhaust valves open and close at 0.050” (1.27mm) and then use a degree wheel to make a note of the timings - degrees in the cycle. I am doing this to ascertain how much, if at all I need to offset the cam gear in relation to the cam shaft. To do this I require some specialist tools – degree wheel, dial gauge indicator, deck height tool.

This is the first time I have done this procedure. I followed the excellent blog written and posted by Bob Hoover. http://bobhooversblog.blogspot.com/20...
