After the great disappointment that was Sonic Forces, it would be five years until the next mainline Sonic entry to come out, and that game was Sonic Frontiers. Sonic Frontiers was released in 2022 for both 8th generation, and for the first time ever, the 9th generation of consoles. Sonic Frontiers marks a major shift in the franchise as it is the first open-world Sonic game that introduces a new and simple combat system and world exploration to the series while also mixing in classic Sonic elements like platforming, rings, and grind rails. While the open world areas of the Starfall Islands is the focus of the game, traditional 3D Sonic levels do return in the form of Cyberspace levels that serve as this game's special stages to acquire the Chaos Emeralds. The story of Sonic Frontiers sees Sonic's friends get trapped in Cyberspace leaving Sonic to explore the secrets of the Starfall Islands to help free his friends. Along the way Sonic learns about an ancient civilization and their connection to the Chaos Emeralds while also trying to learn as much as he can from his new enemy, Sage. Sonic must also collect all the Chaos Emeralds so he can take down each island's Titan which stand in his way from escaping the Starfall Islands with his friends. Get ready to explore the Starfall Islands, relive memories of our past, and uncover the mystery that shrouds these islands.
