Unsung India Foundation presents Episode 2 of Battle of Walong, which captures the grit of Indian soldiers, especially Subedar Ratan Chand and Lieutenant Subba, who stood tall in the face of impossible odds. Even as the brigade was ordered to withdraw, they fought with unmatched courageโcovering their comrades, holding positions till the very last moment, and refusing to bow before overwhelming numbers. Their sacrifice turned retreat into resilience, proving that valor is not only in victory but also in how one endures defeat. In their bravery, the Battle of Walong found its soulโan eternal story of honor, sacrifice, and the undying spirit of the Indian soldier.
In Episode 1, we talked about the massive Chinese assault on Walong and the strategies they employed to overwhelm Indian positions with sheer numbers and firepower. Episode 2 takes us deeper into the decisive days of November 1962, when the Indian Army, outnumbered nearly eight to one and crippled by shortages of men, weapons, and supplies, faced the harsh reality of survival.
By mid-November, the Chinese had amassed almost 15,000 troops against barely 2,500 Indian defenders. Their plan was clear: encircle Walong by blocking the junction of the Yapuk Nala and Lohit Riverโthe only escape route for the Indian brigade. Yet, instead of collapsing under pressure, the Indian troops displayed extraordinary discipline and courage. Units of Assam Rifles, 6 Kumaon, 4 Dogra, 4 Sikh, and 2/8 Gorkha Rifles held their ground in successive defensive lines, fighting delaying actions that cost them dearly but bought precious time for their comrades.
At night, soldiers navigated narrow jungle tracks and crossed the torrential Lohit River, carrying the wounded on their backs, often under enemy fire. Some units were cut off entirely, fighting to the last man rather than surrender. Acts of valor shone through this darknessโjawans laying down covering fire so their brothers could fall back, commanders refusing to abandon their men, and small groups making heroic last stands to slow the enemyโs advance.
By 16 November, Walong had fallen, but the Indian Army had avoided complete encirclement. The disciplined withdrawal saved a significant portion of the brigade from capture, ensuring that the battle would not be remembered as a rout, but as a symbol of resilience. More importantly, the fierce resistance at Walong delayed the Chinese longer than at any other front during the war, forcing them to divert troops and artillery to a battle they had expected to win swiftly.
