For a while now, it's been possible to play games at unlocked frame rates in RPCS3. However, many games will simply break with unlocked frame rates, or will require a fan-made patch to break the normal target frame cap.

There are some games that not only do not require a fan-made patch, but actually play perfectly fine with unlocked frame rates. Sonic Unleashed is one such game, exhibiting no issues in my testing so far at least when at high frame rates.

The game is not optimised enough in RPCS3 to hold these frame rates consistently for very long, but for this video I have cherry picked some areas of the game that do show at least frequent 60 FPS or above areas.

The video was recorded at 120 FPS. I attempted to use the trick whereby I slow the video down to 50% speed, re-encode it as 60 FPS, and then advise people to watch it at 2x speed to see it at 120 FPS. However, I attempted this in private and it did not work, as I believe YouTube has changed the player itself to only ever display 60 FPS, even at 2x speed. So my apologies that you guys can't observe just how smooth the game can look. I have included a performance monitor so people can at least see where the game goes to high FPS and when it dips.

If RPCS3 does see further optimisations that boost performance in Sonic Unleashed and it can hit around 120 FPS consistently, then Sonic Unleashed would become the first mainline Sonic game to be playable at high refresh rates (above 60Hz) assuming none come out before then (currently the only PC Sonic game that can play at high frame rates is Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing).
