People Climb This?!? | The Devil's Thumb | The North Face

Getting a flight over Devil’s Thumb and touring the ice fields was no easy task. I saved up for a long time and made the call in February for our anniversary. “We will wait on the right weather” was what the pilot instructed me. In southeast Alaska not only do we battle low cloud ceilings which make flights impossible due to visibility, but high winds around Devil’s Thumb can make it unsafe. Many climbers have turned back because of winds. So we waited. May came, the weather wasn’t great. Then June. We had flight booked but it was canceled due to wind. Then another day canceled because of fog. The one day that was clear, I was working. “I’ll never get to go” was my reaction after the third cancellation. Finally on a Sunday morning in August I texted because we had a 2 day window of nice weather and I was free. I got a call from our Pilot and we had a flight that afternoon!!!
