3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wang Wenbin, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“Instead of a perpetrator, China is a victim of U.S. economic coercion. We have been firmly opposed to economic coercion by any country in the world and urged the Group of Seven to embrace the trend of openness and inclusiveness in the world, stop forming exclusive blocs and not become complicit in any economic coercion.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wang Wenbin, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The U.S. has slapped unilateral economic sanctions on nearly 40 countries, affecting nearly half of the world's population. Not even G7 members have been spared from U.S. economic coercion and bullying. Companies of U.S. allies such as Toshiba from Japan, Siemens from Germany and Alstom from France were all victims of U.S. suppression. If the G7 summit is to discuss response to economic coercion, perhaps it should first discuss what the U.S. has done.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Wang Wenbin, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“NATO has repeatedly stated that the positioning of NATO as a regional alliance has not changed, not seeking a geographical breakthrough, the Asia-Pacific region is not the geographical scope of NATO, and there is no need to establish an Asia-Pacific version of NATO. However, it has continued to strengthen relations with Asia-Pacific countries, bent on going east into the Asia-Pacific region to intervene in regional affairs, and provoking bloc confrontation. What is its true intention? This calls for high vigilance among countries in the world, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. We hope that the party concerned will not seek so-called geopolitical interests at the expense of undermining regional peace and stability.”

STORYLINE:

China on Friday denied the allegation of economic coercion and urged the Group of Seven to “embrace the trend of openness and inclusiveness.”

At a daily briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin insisted that his country was a “victim” of the U.S. economic coercion when asked about reports suggesting the G7 financial leaders would discuss measures to counter China’s economic coercion at their talks Friday.

China accuses Washington of hindering its rise as an increasingly affluent, modern nation through trade and investment restrictions that the United States says are needed to protect American economic security.

“The U.S. has slapped unilateral economic sanctions on nearly 40 countries, affecting nearly half of the world's population. Not even G7 members have been spared from U.S. economic coercion and bullying,” Wang added, citing what he called U.S. suppression of Toshiba, Siemens and Alstom.

Wang also denounced NATO for what he alleged was expansion into the Asia Pacific that “calls for high vigilance” of regional countries after Japan reportedly sought discussions over opening a NATO liaison office.
