Niskayuna, NY - Dottie Pepper, the most accomplished golfer in Capital Region history, visited the CBS6 studios Thursday afternoon to discuss a variety of topics.
Among them, the 1983 NYS Golf Championships. As a senior at Saratoga Springs High School, Pepper put quite a scare into her male opponents. And apparently into the tournament organizers as well.
"It was 98 guys and me at Cornell," recalled Pepper. "I was leading after nine holes, and then of course the buzz when you had to turn your scorecard in at nine and recapture it."
"Well... the next day those tees were back so far," she added with a laugh, "there's no way that girl's winning this tournament."
Indeed, Pepper did not beat the boys that 1983 day in Ithaca. But she hasn't stopped winning since.
After an All American career at Furman University, she embarked on an LPGA career that netted 17 tour victories including a pair of major championships.
On Wednesday, CBS announced it had signed Pepper to be its first female on-air golf analyst. She will add that assignment to her existing work for ESPN.
The 50-year-old, who is also an accomplished author, makes her home in Saratoga Springs.
