AUSTRALIA has paused to reflect, on the 40th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy.
The natural disaster leveled the city when it hit in the early hours of Christmas morning, 1974.
Four decades on, survivors have remembered the killer storm - which left a trail of destruction in its wake.
Remembering the storm still evokes painful memories for many.
There were 66 reported deaths, but many speculate the number would more likely be in the hundreds.
Thousands were injured, and tens of thousands were displaced with between 80 and 90 per cent of homes destroyed or left unlivable.
