There is no hard and fast rule, but here are four major sizes of napkins meant for different occasions. I suggest trying your fold techniques with the largest size for ease.

Luncheons – 12-inches into 15-inches square
Luncheons and casual dinners – 17-inches square napkins
Formal dinners – 20-inches into 22-inches square napkins
