State lawmakers, educators and students gathered inside East Pennsboro Middle School for a policy roundtable focused on how hunger impacts learning in Pennsylvania schools.

The discussion centered on food insecurity and a proposal to expand free universal school meals across the state. Supporters say hunger remains a significant barrier to academic success for students in Central Pennsylvania and beyond.

State Rep. Nate Davidson (D-Harrisburg) said the issue affects school districts statewide, even though each community faces unique challenges.

“There’s the other 496 school districts in the Commonwealth that all have faced their own unique challenges," State Rep. Davidson said. "Each one is different, but the underlying challenge is students can’t learn when they’re hungry."
