In my opinion, this is the ultimate way to practice improvisation. Pull up a backing track that you haven't heard before, and try to improvise over it for the first time hearing it!

It forces you to LISTEN to the song as you're playing so you don't get too wrapped up in what you're doing. It also challenges your hear to be able to recognize what's going on and respond appropriately!

This is a regular part of my practice routine. It keeps things fresh and fun because the backing track I use is always changing and making me play in different ways.

One of the most important things when practicing improvising is to TRY THINGS! Don't stick to the same licks or patterns you always use, but try different ideas and see what sticks. Some won't work (and that's totally fine) but when you find the couple ideas that DO work, it's very rewarding. Don't be afraid to take chances and discover new ideas.
