Colourised Doctor Who: The Giggle (Toymaker Clips)

While working on 'The Daleks in Colour' in 2022, Rich Tipple and I were asked to colourise a set of clips for use in the 60th Anniversary Special 'The Giggle', which aired 9 December 2023. The finished programme cuts these clips together into a flashback montage. This video presents them in full.

The clips first underwent a fresh restoration by Peter Crocker, applying the latest software to the film transfer made in 2004 for the Lost in Time DVD boxset. The close up shots of Michael Gough's Toymaker were later altered to feature a red background, to more closely match the footage that had been shot of Neil Patrick Harris' reveal as the character. Some of the footage of Hartnell & Gough's exchange was also ultimately used in the montage that ends 'The Daleks in Colour', which actually aired before 'The Giggle' on November 23rd.

'The Adventure of a Lifetime' was also released on November 23rd and is available to view on the offical Doctor Who Youtube channel. Unlike our work on 'The Giggle', the full length of the clips from 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth' and 'The Tomb of the Cybermen' that we coloured for 'The Adventure of a Lifetime' is exactly what is seen in the finished product. The exception is the clip of Barbara from 'The Daleks', which was colourised by Timothy K Brown as part of a longer sequence in 'The Daleks in Colour'.
