Why was Hamas leader Ismael Haniyeh killed in Tehran?

Ismael Haniyeh was a key figure in the history of the Palestinians.

But he was also crucial to the future of the region, leading negotiations to free Israeli hostages and bring an end to the war in Gaza.

He was killed in an apparent missile strike in the Iranian capital - Israel has not said whether it was behind the attack.
