The Mercedes W123 was presented to the press in January 1976. It took on a difficult legacy as the successor to the "dash eight". But it quickly convinced as the faster and safer vehicle. The car became so popular that delivery times increased to up to three years, even though the /8 was produced in parallel for another year.
In 1978 the station wagon was introduced. After some confusion, it was decided to use the name T-model (for transport and tourism) and the model series S123. Thus the first Mercedes estate car was born. Initially considered to be a tradesman's car, the S123 soon proved to be a lifestyle van and enjoyed increasing popularity.
