Have you ever wondered why electric train engines, which run on 25,000 volts of single-phase AC power, still need batteries? Can a train engine run on battery power alone? And how different are the batteries used in train engines compared to those in our everyday vehicles like cars and bikes?

In this detailed video, we explore all these questions and take a deep dive into the role, function, and specifications of the batteries used in electric locomotives like the WAP-7.

We begin by showing how electric power from the overhead OHE wires is collected by the pantograph and transmitted into the locomotive's systems. From there, we explain the crucial role batteries play even before this high-voltage power reaches the engine.

The first and foremost function of the battery is to power the control system of the locomotive with 110V DC using the BL Key. Once the control system is active, the battery powers the baby compressor, which generates the air pressure needed to raise the pantograph. Until the pantograph connects to the overhead wires and the high-voltage AC supply kicks in, the entire system depends solely on the battery.

During this time, the battery also powers other essential functions such as lighting in the driver’s cab and machine room, the horn, wipers, headlamps, and the sanding system which prevents wheel slipping.

A WAP-7 locomotive contains a total of 26 batteries, divided into two battery boxes with 13 batteries each, all connected in series. Each battery produces about 4.23 volts and has a capacity of 199 ampere-hours. When combined, these 26 batteries produce nearly 110 volts, which is essential for the control circuitry of the locomotive.

But can the train actually move using just the battery? The answer is no. The battery only powers the control circuits, not the traction or power circuits that actually move the train. These require the full 25,000 volts of AC supplied via the OHE wires.

We’ll also discuss how these locomotive batteries differ from the batteries used in cars and bikes — not just in size and capacity, but also in function and durability.
