One of WWII’s most persistent legends claims that the RAF once dropped a fake wooden bomb on a German decoy airfield.

The Germans did build fake airfields—constructed of wood and canvas—and Allied pilots often marked them on maps with “K for Kunst,” meaning “fake.” But did someone really troll them with a wooden bomb?

No photos or official records exist, but postwar testimonies—especially from French locals—say it did happen. A wooden bomb, RAF markings and all, left on a wooden airfield.

So did it happen? Maybe. Maybe not. But in a war full of deception, this prank would have fit right in.
