Biographical information:
Wendell D. Gugler was born April 7, 1925 in Abilene, Kansas. He graduated from Abilene High School and was inducted into the Army in 1943. He had volunteered through the National Ski Patrol in New York and was immediately assigned to E Company of the 85th Infantry Regiment at Camp Hale, Colorado. Gugler also served at Camp Swift, Texas, and participated in combat operations against the German Army in Italy. He was honorably discharged February 8, 1946. Following the war, Gugler attended the University of Washington and the University of Kansas. Gugler retired as the president of The Farmers National Bank in Abilene after a forty-two-year career in the banking and insurance industries.

He tells of his voyage to Italy and describes the combat activities at Belvedere with a focus on those who were killed and the changes in leadership. He describes the final stages of the war at the Po River. He discusses the differences between the soldiers who are assigned as replacements and those trained for the 10th Mountain Division.
