John Mazza Collection of Classic Surfboards

Описание к видео John Mazza Collection of Classic Surfboards

I made a recent pilgrimage to a number of surf museums along the Southern California coast and was delighted to find a hidden treasure at Pepperdine University in the library of all places. I had been interviewing Zuma Jay Jefferson at his Malibu surf shop, and he asked if I was going to visit the John Mazza surfboard collection at Payson Library. I had never heard of such a collection, and am I glad that Jay made the suggestion.
The John Mazza collection has just the right number of surfboards from the early 1900s to the early 1980s to give a seasoned collector the highest amount of envy and a novice surfer the simplest background study in how the surfboard he is riding today began its earliest journey.
This video does not do the collection its true justice as I focused primarily on boards and aspects of those boards that interested me. However, each board has a description card that really gives the board and the shapers involved their true historical significance. John Mazza and collectors like him need to be thanked by the surfing community for capturing this historic aspect of surfing and not allowing it to disappear.
I also want to thank John Mazza for allowing me to post this video.

And this collection can also be studied online at:

This collection is in a locked lecture room within the Payson Library at Pepperdine, and I would strongly suggest contacting library staff to arrange your visit.
