For the past 10 years, one granite trad shoe has been king, the La Sportiva TC Pro. With an almost cult-like following and endorsements from the world's most famous climber, Alex Honnold, the “TC Pro”, named after Tommy Caldwell, this shoe has been in demand season after season.

In 2023 the king faces new challengers, one of which is the Scarpa Generator Mid, a new high-top precision crack climbing shoe.

The Generator Mid uses a Tri-Tension active rand for strong underfoot support, PAF (Performance Absorbing Fit) heel rand technology to provide shoe tension with less achilles pressure, and a super sticky M70 rubber toe rand. This all sits on top of a full-length Vibram® XS Edge outsole for stability, support, friction, and extra stability.

The main difference will be how it feels, the two shoes don't fit the same so drop by the store and try them on. If you can’t make it into the shop, here are some quick differences we see between the TC Pro and Generator:

Made for precision footwork, the shape tensions more power over the toes with a bit more shoe asymmetry and a toe box designed for slightly downturned toes.
The overall fit is slightly higher volume than the TC Pro, especially the heel.
Features we like are padding over the ankle bones and the neoprene gaiter that keeps out grit.
With the extra padding, neoprene gaiter, and higher volume the Generator weighs in a little heftier than the TC Pro.
