What is Thread Galling and how can it be prevented?

In this short video, we're taking a look at some of the most common ways of preventing this problem from occurring during fastener installation.

Thread Galling is also known as 'Cold Welding' - a form of adhesive wear which occurs during the installation of components, where further movement becomes impossible without significant force or even breaking the components.

This issue can be particularly problematic when using fasteners made from the same material grade. Titanium, Stainless Steel and Aluminium all produce a self-forming protective oxide layer. When this layer breaks down and the metals come into direct contact with one another and create friction, the resulting heat produced causes the metals to fuse together, causing the fasteners to seize up and lock together.

Particular care needs to be taken when fastening Locking Nuts, as these types of fasteners commonly generate high levels of friction and heat during installation.
