Discover Lucca: Lucca's Tower of the Hours

Описание к видео Discover Lucca: Lucca's Tower of the Hours

The city of Lucca, in medieval times, was adorned by more than two hundred towers. Lucca’s Torre delle Ore (“Tower of the Hours”), located at the corner of Via Fillungo and Via dell’Arancio, is today one of the few remaining examples.

The tower was built by the Quartigiani family and, as many other towers, was intended to be used for defensive purposes. Later, it was used as housing by various noble families. The change of hands was not always peaceable hence the nickname the “tower of dispute”.
During the 14th century, a large number of towers were torn down but the Tower of the Hours escaped this fate. The position in the city centre was decisive, in August 1390, to install a public clock inside the tower.

Gabriele takes us on top of the tower from where the view of Lucca is magnificent. Climbing the 207 steps to reach the top of this tower - the tallest of the city – is worth the effort.
