In 1984, Herbert Raymond “H.R.” McMaster graduated from the United States Military Academy. Upon graduation, McMaster was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army.

During Operation Desert Storm, McMaster served as Commander for Eagle Troop, 2nd Armored Cavalry Division. During the Gulf War, he earned a Silver Star for leading a small contingent of U.S. tanks to destroy around fifty tanks, forty trucks, and twenty-five armored personnel carriers without taking any losses.

In 2005, McMaster also commanded the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment during the Iraq War to remove insurgent fighters from Tal Afar. From 2007-2008, was an advisor for General David Petraeus on counterinsurgency operations.

In 2017, McMaster was nominated as National Security Advisor for President Donald Trump. He was confirmed by the Senate and served from 2017-2018. After his resignation, McMaster requested his retirement from the Army. He served for 34 years with distinction.
