Route 52 West Virginia

I drove from Bluewell to Welch, West Virginia on Route 52, along The Coal Heritage Highway. Strewn along Route 52 in Southern West Virginia are Coal Mining Ghost Towns. Welch and the towns of Northfork, Keystone and Kimball were thriving towns from 1920 until the early 2000s, when decisions were made to shut down coal production in Southern West Virginia. What was left behind was poverty, plight, decay, destruction, and proliferation of opioid drugs that have devasted Southern West Virginia.
