In this video, I go over the geological events that occured when Pangea was breaking up. The break up of Pangea occured in the Triassic and Jurassic periods of the Mesozoic era. Pangea was a supercontinent and during its stable period in the Triassic, it caused widespread dry climates accros the land due to the large distance of much of the continental mass from any ocean. This increased aridity in the Triassic caused strong seasonal swings in temperature and led to the thick evaporite deposits in the rock record. When Pangea began to break up at the end of the Triassic, volcanism from rift zones (called CAMP volcanism) released larges amounts of carbon dioxide and led to global warming, which caused the Late Triassic Mass Extinctions. Rifting of Pangea began in the Tethys region splitting what is now Europa and Africa apart. Eventually rifting extended westward separating North America from Africa and South America. Africa and South America stayed together until the Cretaceous period. The Antler orogeny and Sonoma orogeny at the end of the Paleozoic accreted terrane onto western North America, but in the Triassic and Jurassic, the subduction at this margin changed direction, when the Farallon plate began subducting underneath the North American plate in the Nevadan orogeny. The Sundance Sea filled the foreland basin east of the fold and thrust belt in western North America during the Jurassic period. This is where the Morrison formation was deposited which contains the most abundant dinosaur fossils of all rock formations on Earth! Hope you enjoy ;)
