Tireminder Compressor VS Viair Compressor

The Contenders...

The Heavyweight is going to be the Pancake compressor. I've had this thing for a few years and I actually moved it behind the false wall in the RV so it's in my wet bay area. It takes up no space like this, then I have a hose going to both sides of the storage as well as a drain hose with a valve. The big negative to this setup in the camper is that I do have to use the generator to power the air compressor if we are on the side of the road, but I have the generator mounted in the camper so that's usually not an issue.

The Welterweights...

The Viair is the clear reigning champion in the RV community but can it stay on top? At roughly the same size and weight, the Tireminder comes in with a little longer footprint than the viair. The generalized design is very similar though. They both have an isolator plate for a base. They both have a similar designed head and it wouldn't be a stretch to think that a lot of the parts could be the same. They may even be made in the same factory but I don't really know.

For our testing today we will be letting all of the air out of one of our truck tires which is on the larger size at 285/75/18 which is about 33" tall, then we will see how long each compressor takes to inflate the tire to 60 PSI with each of the 3 compressors. To keep the fight fair we are starting the pancake compressor on an empty tank for the timed test.

On the inflation test the clear winner was the pancake compressor which isn't really a surprise as it's a larger compressor. It took 8 minutes and 16 seconds for the Pancake compressor.

The second and third places were separated by a mark of almost two minutes but the 2nd place winner was the viair at 11 minutes 23 seconds and then the Tireminder at 13 minutes 15 seconds.

The second test that we did was for how loud the compressors were. The Tireminder and Viair compressors were pretty close at approx 1 foot away the Tireminder was 76 decibels Viair compressor was 77 decibels and the pancake compressor which was actually on the other side of a partial wall 84 decibels.

Let's talk about the air chucks. I actually used the tireminder air chuck on the pancake compressor so there is really only a comparison of the two systems here. While I liked the fact that the Viair had a quick connection on it, it was kind of a letdown. The main reason for this is the fact that even my friend who owns this compressor pointed out that the viair built-in chuck reads 10 psi less than it actually is. This was true with my testing. Also, a negative you have to turn the compressor off to check the pressure. If you had a long hose, this is the exact reason I didn't like my viair before, you would have to go all the way back to the compressor and turn it off, then go back to the tire and check the pressure. That mixed with the 10 psi difference, you had to take it off the tire quite a bit and put it back on after checking the pressure with a dedicated gauge so the quick connect came in handy. It did have a better feature for deflating the tires where you could press in and turn the hose and it would deflate the tires, however, besides this exact scenario I don't know when you would actually use this in an RV-related scenario as it is usually more for off-roading. The tire chuck on the Tireminder is a clear winner for me. Number 1 it's electronic. Number 2 it has a trigger mechanism to both inflate and deflate, so you don't have to go back to the compressor and turn it off to check the pressure. Number 3 it's accuracy is within 1.5-2 lbs.
