This week in black history, Ernest Just, was the first ever recipient of the Spingarn medal. The Spingarn medal is given every year by the NAACP for outstanding achievement by an African American. The Spingarn Medal was later bestowed upon such individuals as W.E.B. DuBois, George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Welcome to Love Black Culture and this week in Black History, One of the people responsible for founding Omega Psi Phi and great scientist became the first person to win the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP. Remember when you watch the video to the end, we donate a portion of the profit to Charity.

On February 2nd, 1915 Ernest Just, was the first ever recipient of the Spingarn medal. The Spingarn medal is given every year by the NAACP for outstanding achievement by an African American. The Spingarn Medal was later bestowed upon such individuals as W.E.B. DuBois, George Washington Carver, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King jr. Though Just was a world renowned scientist, he remained humble, accepting the prestigious medal stating “I thank the Association for the award, not so much for myself as for the students whom I represent."

Ernest Just had an impressive career but his primary legacy is in the field of Cytology. Cytology is the branch of biology concerned with the structure and function of plant and animal cells. His work in the recognition of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms was groundbreaking and plays a large role in our understanding of cells today.

Just authored two books, in 1939 and he also published at least seventy papers in the areas of cytology, fertilization and early embryonic development.

In addition to his role as a great scientist, Just was also a great mentor and was the head of zoology at Howard University. On November 17th, 1911 Dr. Just and 3 Howard University students are a most loved Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman established the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity on the campus of Howard University, the school’s first black fraternity.

In addition to the Spingarn Medal that Just was awarded. He also received a commemorative stamp in 1996,Is honored by the American Society for cell biology by having an award in his name, has been honored several times by his alma maters, The University of Chicago and Dartmouth University, and in 2002 was included on the list of 100 greatest African Americans

Despite the fact that Just's work received world-wide attention, the color bar that so dominated life in the United States of the early 1900s denied him access to the research positions and grant funds that would have assured full participation in the scientific world. Even so, when Just died in 1941 at the age of fifty-eight, he was universally recognized as one of his era's most able and devoted scientists.
