Vasus were killed by their mother, #Ganga. This happened because the eight Vasus were cursed by Sage #Vashistha to be reborn as mortals. To escape the curse's full earthly punishment, the #Vasus requested Ganga to be their mother and then drown them at birth, allowing them to return to heaven. Ganga agreed to this, fulfilling her promise to the Vasus by drowning her first seven children, but she left the eighth child, their uncle #Prabhasa, to live a mortal life as #Devavrata, later known as #Bhishma, as a punishment for his role in stealing the cow that led to the curse.


The Curse of the Vasus
The eight Vasus were demigods who stole the sacred cow Nandini from Sage Vashistha.
Angered by the theft, Vashistha cursed them to be reborn as mortals on Earth.
Ganga's Role
The Vasus implored Ganga to be their mother, so she incarnated and married King Shantanu.
Ganga agreed to the marriage on the condition that Shantanu would never question her actions.
The Tragic Births
After giving birth to seven sons, Ganga immediately drowned them in her waters, freeing them from their curse.
When the eighth son was born, King #Shantanu could not bear the suffering of losing another child and broke his promise by shouting at Ganga.
Ganga then left Shantanu, having fulfilled her promise to the Vasus by drowning the first seven, but leaving the eighth child, Prabhasa (as Devavrata), to suffer the remainder of the curse.
