John 13:1(NKJV) Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come, that He should be depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. 2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son to betray Him. 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured into a basin and began to wash the disciple’s feet, and to wipe with the towel with which He was girded.

Suddenly Jesus became aware of the fact that His life was about to end. At this point He changed His ministry from a public ministry to a disciple ministry. He was going to sink into the disciples what they needed to know to carry on after Jesus was gone.

John 17:25-27 (NKJV) “And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You love Me may be in them, and I in them.”

In reading John chapters 13-17, two topics surface.
1. You are to love one another. Jesus wanted His disciples to understand that if they were to carry on Christ’s ministry they needed to understand and walk in love. He was warning them that the most difficult place in your love walk is in loving one another.

2. The ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Jesus wanted them to understand the importance of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer not through the life of the believer. In discussing the working of the Holy Spirit through us we are talking about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The reason Christ wanted to address the Holy Spirit in them instead of through them is, if they weren’t familiar enough to recognize the Spirit in them, they would not be sensitive to know when He wanted to work through them.

John 14: 16 -17 (KJV) And I pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

John 15: 26 (KJV) But when the comforter is come, who I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

John 16:13 (KJV) Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and he will shew you things to come.

John 14: 26 (KJV) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

What will the Spirit of truth do when he comes?
1. He will teach you all things.
2. He will bring all things to your remembrance (remind).
3. He will guide you in all truth.
4. He will show you things to come.

What Jesus is saying to us is this, when the Spirit of God is in you, His primary function in you is to be a teacher.

1 Thessalonians 5: 18-19 (KJV) In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit.

Paul is telling us here that we are capable of quenching the Holy Spirit. He warns us not to quench the Holy Spirit. To quench means to extinguish, suppress or stifle.

Every action of the Spirit can be quenched.

1 Thessalonians 5:20 (KJV) Despise not prophesying.

Despise means- to make of no account, utterly nothing, regard as worthless, to regard as nothing.

The only way you can quench the Spirit is after He has revealed a truth to you and you treat it as nothing, you become indifferent.

The quench issue has to do with the value you place on the truth revealed. The area in your life that the Spirit is trying to make an adjustment will remain unadjusted if you quench the Spirit.

How must we honor the Word? Honor means to value, to esteem highly, treat as weighty.
Dishonor means to treat as worthless, insignificant, common. Things of value are treated differently than things of no value.

When the Spirit of God teaches you, reminds of you of a truth, as you read the Bible, the value you place on that revealed truth, determines the degree of impact it will be able to have in your life.
