By using identity federation, you're reducing the attack surface of your deployment by minimizing user accounts, allowing for integration with existing identity systems, while improving experience for your users. While federated identity certainly isn't a new feature, people still struggle understanding some of the underlying concepts and use cases, making it hard for them to know if they're in a situation that would benefit from identity federation.
