Took a little trip to western Ohio this weekend with my buddy Ryan to pick up the newest addition to his fleet of semi trucks: a 1980 GMC General. It has an 8v71 (318 non-turbo) Detroit Diesel with dual 5" straight pipes, a Roadranger 13-speed transmission (not sure if it's an RTO12513 or RTO14613), and Rockwell rears with Hendrickson walking-beam suspension. It also has a PTO with a wetline kit, and we were told it originally came from a paving company...so I'm guessing it pulled a dump trailer for rock or asphalt.

For a while, Ryan had been searching for a General with Detroit two-stroke power to add to his collection, and he knew the cousin of the guy who was selling this truck on Facebook, so he was able to pick it up for a pretty good price. We drove 430 miles to the guy's shop, where we topped off all the fluids, greased the u-joints on the driveshaft, and fixed some bad wires, before taking the truck back to PA. The truck certainly woke the neighbors up at 8:30 in the morning...that 8v71 really screams with dual straight pipes. The mic on my phone isn't good for videos anymore, but it was still able to pick up the great sound of that Detroit as we went through the gears and rode home on the interstate at 70 MPH. That truck was turning heads everywhere we went - even got us some attention on the Dying Breed Diesels Facebook page.
