In this project, I am using a 10-bit (1024 count/revolution) digital rotary encoder in order to read the position of a control dial. This position is then sent to a stepper motor which in turn mirrors the angular position of the rotary encoder.

I used the OSEPP Motor Shield (Adafruit Motor Shield clone) and the provided Adafruit Motor Shield Arduino library. I wrapped the single step functions of the Adafruit Motor Shield Library with the AccelStepper library in order to provide absolute position control and acceleration/decelleration of the stepper.

The system had better performance than I had expected, however the stepper motor is a little big for the limited Motor Shield to power. The motor shield can only source 0.6 A of current, and therefore the stepper can only be power by about 3.5V at the moment. This limits the torque coming out of the motor, however it is still sufficient for most purposes.

I plan on eventually using this rotary encoder for data input and manual control on an automated camera motion controller rig. This will be used for both video recording and time lapse interval photography with precise movements in between each shot.
