Map of Africa showing location of Nigeria. Voice-over by Nigerian man. Cattle in a field . A man uses a primitive irrigation device - a shaduf / shadoof - to propel water down a trench. A village is shown where wells have been dug. Men and women work with groundnuts. Man climbs palm tree. Another picks a cocoa pod. Man eats sugar cane. Tin Mining. Open cast method. Many men working by hand. Groundnuts - ploughs are pulled by water buffalo. Seeds sown by hand, using the feet to make holes for the seed. Children and women work. Groundnut plants are harvested and stacked. Simple tools are used for threshing. The women pound the nuts in mortars to separate the husks. Winnowing - letting the husks blow away in the wind. Sacks of groundnuts are loaded on to mules and taken to market.



Journey to Kano - the market centre of the North. Children eating, people buying necessities and "small pleasures" of life. Sacks of groundnuts are unloaded, weighed and examined for quality. Matches and soap are bargained for. C/Us of characters. A man has his hair cut in the open air. A horse race. Sacks of groundnuts are piled up in large pyramids. The porters load freight trains with the sacks. Cocoa beans grow in the south. Man uses knife on the end of a long pole to cut down pods at top of trees. Pods slashed open and the beans are removed (seen in C/U). Palm oil and palm kernels. Man climbs a palm tree to pick the fruit with the aid of a sling. Outer covering is chopped off and the kernels spread out to dry. Children crack the shells by hand. Lorries transport the kernels to Lagos. Cargo loaded on to ships at docks. Man operates a winch.
