This hike to High Point Monument in New Jersey takes you to the state’s highest point—literally—via a scenic 2.8-mile out-and-back along the Appalachian Trail. Instead of driving to the monument like most visitors, we’ll earn the summit the old-fashioned way, with our boots on the trail and great views along the way. You’ll get sweeping vistas over three states—New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York—and some solitude that car-bound visitors miss.

We start near the High Point State Park office and immediately hop on the Appalachian Trail, which is well-marked with white blazes. It’s a moderate climb, about 500 feet of elevation gain, and winds through classic Northeast forest and granite outcroppings. About a mile in, we hit one of the highlights of the hike: a quiet viewing platform that gives you a postcard view of the monument without the crowds.

The final leg takes us across a road and up the Monument Trail to the actual High Point Monument, a 1930s-era obelisk dedicated to New Jersey’s veterans. Once you’re there, it’s worth lingering. There are interpretive signs pointing out the distant peaks and landmarks, and on a clear day, the views are hard to beat.
